The Womyn Before

Hey y’all, Anyone who likes spoken-word poetry should take a look at this video of Alix Olson talking about what has inspired her to get involved in activism:Anyone want to share their own inspirations? Here are some of mine:Virginia Woolf, Katharine Hepburn, Betty Friedan (I started digging her after my history teacher in high school wouldn’t stop talking about how ugly she was–how great are our schools, huh?), bell hooks, Adrienne Rich, Judith Butler

  1. Elizabeth Cady Staton, “The Solitude of Self”

“The strongest reason why we ask for woman a voice in the government under which she lives… is because of her birthright to self -sovereignty; because, as an individual, she must rely on herself.”

And oh my goodness, just finished reading a book for my POSC 101 class, which makes the assertion that one instance of impiety towards nature, which is typical of contempt for natural order is “the foolish and destructive notion of the ‘equality’ of the sexes.” It includes lines like “What God hath made distinct, let not man confuse!” “A social subversion of the most spectacular kind has resulted. Today, in addition to lost generations, we have a self-pitying, lost sex.”
I would say it’s ridiculous and not take it seriously, but unfortunately, I know there are plenty of people out there (male and female) who still believe women and men should not be considered equal and women should stay in the house.

  2. I totally dig bell hooks.
    oh, and Margaret Atwood.
    Simone de Beauvoir intrigues me.
Also, Jessica Valenti and the gals of feministing…woot!
