Injustice Watch 2008

Sometimes I feel like I have gone back in time.  No, not in the Marty McFly-in-a-Delorian kind of way, but in the “Jesus Christ We Are Chipping Away at Civil Rights Holy Fucking Shit!” kind of way. This article was sent to us by Caitlin Madden (I think–correct me if I am wrong, and please sign your email next time :)  ), and it explains why a wronged man might not win his Supreme Court case.  Why?  Because apparently, it might not be within his rights to be protected from retaliation (in this case, being fired) after he complained that his boss was making racist remarks.  So, he has a right not to be discriminated against . . . but when he is discriminated against and complains, he does NOT have the right NOT to be fired for complaining? This is an important legal case that will gravely impact future cases of employee discrimination.  Workers need to have the right to be themselves in the workplace without fear of retaliation, and they need to have the right to face a discriminatory employer in court when they are punished for exercising their rights as people and as citizens.  And we need to have a court system that allows those who have been wronged to be compensated. If you are not already motivated to vote for a president in November who will protect workers’ rights, hopefully this will motivate you.
