My Dream . . .

I had a dream last night in which everyone was yelling at me for not posting enough to this blog! So, here is another post for your Sunday viewing pleasure. One of my roommates sent me this link about a museum exhibit designed to education children about sex. (A much more fun and less creepy way of learning than from one’s Phy-Ed teacher *shudder*!) Included in the exhibit are murals of men and women making love (one with the man on top and one with the woman on top), a “pubermatic” that shows how adolescents change during puberty, and an inflatable penis.Although some might look at the French as crude or hyper-sexed or poor parents, the fact is that France is much more effective at teaching adolescents and teens about sex, making them more capable decision-makers. According to Advocates for Youth, teens in France and in the U.S. start having sex at around the same age. However, American teens tend to have more partners, and are more likely to get pregnant or terminate a pregnancy. Why? Because Americans are sexually ignorant. My dream is to see some similar exhibits pop up in U.S. museums. Knowledgeable teens are safer teens. France has known this for quite some time–when will America learn?

  1. Really interesting article….I would really like to play sperm pinball.

All I know about French culture I learned from “Amelie”, but the one thing I wondered about this exhibit was whether it dealt with homosexuality at all. Though a museum exhibit about gay sex is possibly centuries away from coming to the U.S.

I am very curious if a modified version of this could work in the U.S. one day….but if all the statistics on just how much abstinence-only education does NOT WORK haven’t convinced anybody yet, I’m not sure any sort of reason will.
