V to the 10th: Another Perspective

Here is a great Salon article reviewing The Vagina Monologues from a slightly less enthusiastic point of view. Part of the reason those of us at Marquette are so TVM-happy is that, at our university, such dialogue is censored on campus. (*gasp! women have private parts!*) So, Eve Ensler’s loud and sometimes outrageous production is exactly what Marquette needs to be woken up to the fact that silencing women only makes the campus environment a more dangerous and insecure one.

However, there are quite a few problems with The Vagina Monologues–its super-intense focus on the body, for example. Another problem is the celebrity surrounding the productions. Celebrities are useful to raise money, but do they also corrupt the message? Well, in any case, this review traces some of the problems with The Vagina Monologues, but still finds the positives in the performance and can appreciate everything Ensler’s work has done to help women. Check it out.
