More visas for prettier people

“How ridiculous and how strange to be surprised at anything which happens in life!”

Feminism keeps one on their toes. Whenver I find myself agreeing with Aurelius’ pronouncement, I find myself floored by something like this:

Congressman Anthony Wiener (D-NY) has submitted a proposal that would create a new class of work permit of exclusive benefit foreign fashion models.

The bill aims to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to create a separate category for fashion models, and would limit the number of visas to 1,000 for each fiscal year, according to a document that accompanies the bill.

Out of the hundreds of bills to die per session before making it to committee, this one looks close to passage:

Weiner introduced his proposal in the House late last year which has not yet been scheduled for a vote, though it was recently referred to the Committee of the Whole, where less rigid rules allow bills to be passed quicker.

Really, Mr. Wiener, is this what the people of the great state of New York elected you to do? TO make life even easier for the most privileged–yet most pouty–among us? Might not your time, and that of your collegues, be better spent debating comprehensive immigration reform, healthcare, or  the new Iraq funding measure–which, by the way, Congress is passing despite the Bush administration’s failure to meet Democratic conditions demanding more thorough training and equipping of soldiers and withdrawl timetables.

  1. There better be a separate category for intellectual refugees.

Besides, I don’t want to know what a bunch of senators plan to do with that influx of fashion models. (Can I even make that joke/reference here?)
