Does one wish someone a “happy” 40th Stonewall Riots anniversary?

Or pleasantly remind them, “There is much joyous work to do yet”?

In commemoration of the Greenwich village gay community’s demonstrations against unprovoked police raid on LGBT-friendly establishments, widely viewed as the beginning of the American gay-rights movement, President Obama made a statement recognizing the occassion and reiterating his campaign promises to that community (those communities?), but did not set a timeline for their fulfillment.

Now, therefore, I, Barack Obama, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists.

You get a month! Congrats.

  1. Wow. A whole month. In the summer. You mean I get to watch a parade AND wear shorts to do it?

Oh Barack, how you spoil us.

Now repeal DOMA and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and declare it unconstitutional to ban gay adoption. THEN we’re talking.

    • Storm: Now don’t be bitter just because he didn’t make good on any of his campaign promises or spring for one of those fancy 31-day months. Be lucky you got those 30 days that you did; African Americans have to make by with only 28 days of recognition a year, with an extra thrown in every 4 years.
