Two completely unaffiliated men show up to Obama town hall with guns

He’s actually better spoken than Chris Matthews. Granted, he exercises astounding cognitive dissonence, his stated motivations are internally inconsistent, and Matthews was as exasterbated as most people would be in his situation.

But still. Stone cold:

Even if he hadn’t had a gun, his poster reading

IT’S TIME TO WATER THE TREE OF LIBERTY!

Would have been disturbing enough in-of-itself. It is a clear allusion to an often misquoted passage from a Nov. 13, 1787 letter from Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith:

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. …

What country before ever existed a century and half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

Even if Kostric wasn’t talking about shooting the president, he might have been willing to let his own patriotic blood be shed in some violent demonstration, although he claimed

Clearly, I’m not advocating violence.

How else are we supposed to interpret the sign?

Either the legally unconcealed weapon or allusive sign in-of-itself would have adequately suggested anything from a vague sense of menace to overt threat. It would be using phyiscal intimidation to try to dictate the terms of a debate. That isn’t debate at all. That is tyranny.

And another, reported in the Sea Coast Online:

PORTSMOUTH — Police said a man arrested at the scene of President Barack Obama’s visit to the city Tuesday was found to be in possession of an unlicensed loaded gun.

Richard Terry Young, 62, of 821 Ocean Blvd. in Hampton, was arrested around 9:40 a.m., hours before Obama’s arrival, and charged with the misdemeanor crimes of criminal trespass and carrying a loaded pistol without a license.Young was found inside Portsmouth High School, where Obama later in the day held his town hall-style forum. Young was detained by the Secret Service and subsequently arrested by Portsmouth Lt. Corey MacDonald. Young was carrying a pocket knife, police said. A subsequent search of his vehicle, parked on school property, revealed a loaded hand gun, police said.

In the spirit of fairness–does anyone know how many armed persons were detained at Bush rallies? What were their stated political orientations? What sort of coverage did they get?
