Obligatory Halloween Post

No matter what you’re doing to celebrate the harvest this year, try to keep the Word Warrior in the back of your mind. I wanted to create this post so we can document both the amazing and wonderful costumes and the sexist/racist/homophobic/etc. costumes we see this year. So here’s your prompt:

What was the costume?

Where did you see this costume in action?

What makes this costume awesome (or unacceptable)?

Did you say anything? If so, what did you say?

Happy Halloween-ing everyone! If you see an 80s aerobics instructor running around in Walker’s Point tonight, it’s probably me. Say hi!

  1. Last night I went out for a walk, and saw a weird lot of women as “sexy construction worker.” Not sure what to say about that (see my own Halloween post), but still. Lot of people making what seem’d to me an odd choice.
Also, one guy in a guy’s collared shirt and kind of frilly skirt. Didn’t think to ask who it was; your mention of homophobia only just now inspired me to the possibility it might have been ripping on drag. Or he might have been in drag himself (though he’d done nothing with his shirt or hair, so probably not).

  2. What was the costume? native american indian–headdress and all and other various “cultural” (i dunno a better word for it) costumes like “the mexican”–sombrero and all
Where did you see this costume in action? a bar in memphis
What makes this costume awesome (or unacceptable)? i think most cultural costumes are done in bad taste probably without much reflection
Did you say anything? If so, what did you say? nope, but someone in my group did–we were a bunch of rad critical race and gender wannabe theorists, so we were talking about that broadly the whole night. It was great nerdy fun!
