“Suffer the little children to come onto me”

A Colorado Catholic school has forbidden a preschooler from returning in the fall because her parents are a lesbian couple. Fortunately, some faculty members describe their superior’s decision as “disgusting” and “disheartening.” The archdiocese released a statement:

No person shall be admitted as a student in any Catholic school unless that person and his or her parents subscribe to the school’s philosophy and agree to abide by the educational policies and regulations of the school and Archdiocese.

Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose to disqualify their children from enrollment.

How many children of divorcées do you think are allowed attend? How many are the children of contraceptive users? Of masturbators? I know among the 50-person graduating class of my Catholic elementary school were two Muslims and a Presbyterian. Should they have been disqualified?

Also, pet peeve: The diocese’s requirement that a child “subscribe to the school’s [Catholic] philosophy” is unreasonable. A preschooler can’t be a conscientious subscriber to any philosophy. A child that young is at a point in their psychological development where they lack the conceptual reasoning and experience to form any beliefs that aren’t implanted in them. They literally can’t even seperate fiction from reality. At that age, there are no “Catholic children.” There are only children being raised to be Catholics.
