Itawamba Count Agricultural High School

Even before but especially after the masturbatory Apatheist-cum-Probabalistic Agnostic Bus Campaign Atheist Bus Campaign, I’ve been frustrated with the main current of organized irreligion.  But then this happened.

Some background: Constance McMillen is a senior at Itawamba Count Agricultural High School in Mississippi. She is a lesbian. After asking her school for permission to attend prom with her girlfriend, her case was denied. Rather than risk running afoul discrimination laws (the ACLU had threatened to sue by this point), the school district decided to cancel Itawamba Count’s prom altogether:

“Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year,” school board members said in a statement.

LGBT-allied observers were of course outraged and concerned, worrying about possible violent action against McMillen for inadvertently ruining prom. Dan Savage wondered ominously:

Today she’s being glared at and ostracized. What’s going to happen to McMillen tomorrow? And next week? And the week after that? What’s going to happen to her as the date of the cancelled prom approaches?

But now, the American Humanist Association has stepped up and pledged a $20,000 grant to fund an all-inclusive prom for all Itawamba students.

I’m proud of my community.
